Gosh…it’s been a long time since I wrote anything.

I didn’t even realize I hadn’t done it since I looked at the last blog post, which was like at the beginning of the year!

Sorry about that…sometimes life just gets away from us.

Each year, Pete and I try to do something new with the farm…we listen to what you want and try to give it to you.

This year was no different.

However…what we experimented with HAS been very different.

Are you excited to hear about it?

ME TOO!

We’ve been a complete vegetable farm for the whole existence of the business and because of this, over the years people have been influencing us to grow another type of plant.

Hemp CBD extract.

Pete said, “I mean I’m good at growing plants and this thing is meant to increase agricultural production for farmers… why not?”

And so we did!

Is Texas a Good Place to Grow Hemp?

First…a bit about hemp…

Hemp IS part of the cannabis family. However, it is considered a different subspecies than marijuana.

There is still a bit of a stigma on hemp. But just so you know, it is now federally legal across all states since the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill. However, each state may have its own regulations and guidelines that farmers and sellers must follow.

Hemp does contain THC (the psychoactive part of marijuana) but at a lower rate. However, it can spike if conditions are right. Texas requires all hemp to be lab tested and the amount of THC must be less than .3%. If it’s higher, it has to be disposed of.

Texas allows for vertical integration with this product. What that means is…we are allowed to grow it, manufacture it, and sell it. Some states don’t allow that at all. You can either grow it or sell it. This gives us control over the whole process making sure our values stay true at each stage.

Why We Decided to Grow Hemp CBD Extract

1. We don’t like chemicals on our things or sneaky ingredients. We are all about doing things in a more natural way. Hemp CBD extract has great medicinal properties (*I’m not a medical professional so please do your research and seek medical advice from the right authorities) that would be a great addition to eating a healthy lifestyle.

2. In our research, we came across some really untrustworthy practices that are going on in the hemp industry…and you know us…we’re not down for that! We want you to know how your CBD is grown and processed.

3. We want to bring it back to Texas. There are a lot of THC-legal states that are sitting at the borders just waiting to come in and take over. This is Texas and we’re growing it here. 😜

How Our First Season Of Growing Hemp Went

It does NOT grow like vegetables. There was a lot of learning that went on with the actual grow part. The timing was off and who knew it did not need as much water as vegetables! I mean it is a “weed” and they survive off of practically nothing.

This is our first time dealing with legal regulations and crossing those T’s and dotting those I’s. Growing hemp and manufacturing hemp CBD extract are regulated by the Texas Department of Agriculture and Texas Department of State Health Services. We’re taking this one step at a time making sure that our product is following the rules to a tee. This makes it safe for you AND so we don’t get in trouble!

Producing hemp CBD extract is for sure a process!! Pete and I can’t do this alone. We now have a team of people helping make this product a success.

The Team:

First up, is Lil Juan. Yep! You read that right! He got that name because he married Samantha (coming up soon) whose dad is also Juan, so to distinguish them apart…he got Lil Juan. But once you meet him for real, the name suits him PERFECTLY. He’s our hemp growing expert with several years of experience growing the product in other states. He’s working alongside Farmer Pete to really make a solid foundation for Texas-grown hemp.

Stacey is our extractor. She’s the gal in charge of getting that good CBD and other cannabinoids out of the hemp plant and ready to shift on over to the consumable products. This department is very critical and is actually the foundation of the whole endeavor.

Samantha is responsible for all the consumables. She’ll work closely with Stacey on what cannabinoid goes best with what product. She is also creating all the recipes for the products making sure she’s using all-natural ingredients that you know and understand.

Mr.E is the manager connecting all the dots together. There are a lot of moving parts in something like this and he is here to make sure they all run smoothly.

When Will The Products Be Ready?

I have no idea!!

Just kidding…well not really but sort of…

The hemp has already been grown and dried. At this point, it is in the curing process and will be extracted soon (pressing the oil out). After that, we can make the actual products, ie. gummies, tinctures, etc.

Since this is our first time, I don’t know how long all of this will take exactly but we’re estimating some time really soon.
